Finkelstein Being Trolled by Gilmore

News As previously reported by Greplaw, Mr Seth Finkelstein has provoked quite a reaction. Mr John Gilmore and Professor Lawrence Lessig have issued replies to the debate on Mr John Gilmore's flight-stunt. Mr John Gilmore was rejected from a flight because Mr Gilmore wore a badge saying “Suspected Terrorist”. Should the flight captain have ejected Mr Gilmore because of the button or not? The discussion has been heated, not least since Mr Seth Finkelstein suggested that Mr Gilmore's behaviour was 'a millionaire’s version of trolling.' Mr Gilmore, in return, called Mr Finkelstein a troll. Mr Finkelstein, in response, feels like he should quite his debate and activism altogether.

You could of course argue as signature Dick - quite funnily stated - in Professor Lessig's blog: 'I think Seth has now passed the state of California in Whine production' and that if you can not take the heat, then get out of the kitchen. However, Mr Finkelstein's recent endeavours may present an actual problem with modern day blogging and activism. Why should you participate in the debate if you are not already rich and famous? How much heat is worth taking if you can not even help yourself with the food in kitchen? The cost-benefit analysis plays tricks on the individual. Or as Mr Finkelstein puts it in his own words:

'In general, I've long been bothered by a sense that I'm playing politics out of my league. That my "level", in terms of audience and press-reach, is way too low for the things I'm trying to do. And then that the implication of this underpowered/overmatched situation, is that I'll always end up with a negative result, personally, for anything I do.'

Read Mr Finkelstein's own cost-benefit analysis.

The whole thing has an interesting celebrity soap opera quality about it. Kind of like Sean Penn vs. the paparazzi. Perhaps it is the effect of blogging that is to blame. See, e.g., the Winer v. Blood saga.

Mr. Finkelstein, in response, feels like he should quit his debate and activism altogether.
As I pointed out later in my posting [sethf.com], it's not about the name-calling here per se. It's about the process, the playing of Russian Roulette. It's what implications it contains, for being sued due to my censorware [sethf.com] efforts.

And the whole topic has bothered me for years, but intensified recently.

I understand how I might sound like a whiner. But there's many deep matters here.

Was scary warped soul named Seth, He flamed and he flamed, Then he whined, and he whined, "Stop, your upsetting me to death!"
