In Nazis Germany the government asked the people to spy on and report neighbors who did "suspicious" activities. Then the government got the children to do the same. Postal workers were also required to do this.
Ah... how far we have come. Rules to live by if you want to control the populace:
1. To control the people you must first control the media.
2. You must engender Fear, Unease, and Distrust (or FUDs) in people so they will look to you for comfort.
3. Turn everyone against a common foe. (Jews in WWII, Saddam Hussein in today's world.) Remember - you do not have to have a sane reason for doing so - just stir up feelings so everyone is behind you.
4. Do away with Congress and the Senate. Oops! We haven't quite gotten there yet have we? Well, maybe next year.
5. Kill, jail, or otherwise get rid of all of those who oppose you. (Can't be done until the government is basically overthrown.)
6. Usage of military force to maintain control.
Kind of scary - isn't it? We are already half way there and the majority is now all one party. It just will take the right kind of stimuli to get us to #4. Like going to war. Just like Germany did.
And no - I'm not Ted Rall.

Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be
lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition.
