Digital Download Day Offers Free Music, Legally

Digital Entertainment (Reuters)"Digital Download Day" begins this Thursday, actually lasts a week and allows music fans in Europe to legally download, stream or burn a selection of tracks from 6,000 artists.

OD2, a digital music distribution company co-founded by Peter Gabriel, developed the Digital Download Day initiative to influence consumers to download from legal sites instead of from the popular file-swapping pages. OD2 has secured the digital streaming rights to 100,000 songs from many music labels, including EMI Group and BMG.

The Digital Download Day program will only be open to European Web users, who may register on one of the six participating sites in order to receive $7.90 worth of digital music. Featured artists include ColdPlay, Dido and Elvis Presley.
