Gnuheter reports that Thomson Multimedia has introduced new MP3 licensing fees. The new fees are USD 0.75 per decoder and USD 5.00 per encoder. This will make development and usage of MP3 software much more expensive than before. In an unexpected twist, Emmett Plant of Xiph.org, the company developing free sound format Ogg Vorbis, has written an open thank you-letter to Thomson.
