Hackers Posted Phony News Stories on USA Today Website
posted by justfred on Friday July 12, @01:37PM
from the making-news dept.
News Around 11:00 p.m. last night, hackers posted six fake news stories on the USA Today homepage, including an article that claimed the Supreme Court declared the shape of the Pentagon to be unconstitutional. Fifteen minutes later, editors took the site offline, restoring the service around 2:00 a.m. USA Today spokesperson Steven Anderson said the fake stories did not represent any ideological position, but appeared to be "very prankish, very immature." While the identity of the hacker(s) still remains unknown, local authorities have been notified. Reuters has the story.
