The Pirate Bay's Response to Legal Threats
posted by scubacuda on Thursday December 16, @12:02PM
from the dept.
Digital Entertainment For a cheap laugh, check out responses that one of the biggest Torrent sites, The Pirate Bay, have sent in various companies asking that they shutdown their torrent site (Microsoft, MonoMusic, Dreamworks, , Uppsala Universitet, ADV Films, Sublimal Sounds, SEGA, & Sveriges Radio). My particular favorite:
I have the distinct pleasure of informing you that no Swedish trademark and/or coypyright law is being violated, regardless of how the situation may or may not be under UK law. I would advise you to read up on Swedish trademark law, more specifically Varumarkeslag (1960:644), as this might save you a great deal of future humiliation.

I would also advise you to
a) not write the subject all in UPPERCASE, as it makes spam filters go nuts
b) not attach meaningless data from trademark registrys in PDF format and
c) stop lying.

Bluffing is so common with loose data now. Everyone knows that quoting this or that, (or, for that matter - the other) is one way to swing some imaginary weight. Many sites do a similar thing with authentication - which is real and which isn't? Nice to see someone fighting back.

That site is new to me but my favorite response included a geography lesson:

As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States
of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe.
Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here.
For your information, no Swedish law is being violated.

Please be assured that any further contact with us, regardless of medium,
    will result in
    a) a suit being filed for harassment
    b) a formal complaint lodged with the bar of your legal counsel, for
    sending frivolous legal threats.

It is the opinion of us and our lawyers that you are fucking morons, and
that you should please go sodomize yourself with retractable batons.

Please also note that your e-mail and letter will be published in full on

I'd like to think that our readers are more sophisticated than this. :b

Wishful thinking on my part, I'm sure.

its not your fault the result is high in google for pirate bay because google is a snob when content commes from big institution so you will get the ocasional 13 years old. dont worry abou that, what is interesting is the fact that the pirate bay reaction will force corporation to hit where they can and that means that we wil see more and more parents sued for Gazillion of dollar by big corporation for the action of their 13 years old on the internet. thank good i live in canada

Well Canada is far from protected, there have been a lot of P2P issues there too, only recent issue I can remember is Shaw blocking ports of some users to try and curve bittorrent use.

The Pirate Bay lives! Its now bigger and better then ever in 10 languages! God bless Sweden for having balls enough to allow liberal copyright laws. As bittorrents become ever more popular over the world, they will become unstoppable. I like the fact that someone is not turning tail in the face of big business, and in some ways big brother.
