FCC: Pyramid Schemes Are Illegal, Even in Email Form

Criminal Law In a move that presumably will be hailed by everyone who hates spam, the Federal Trade Commission sent out warnings to the people listed on the old "just sent $1 to each of the people on this list and you'll get rich beyond your wildest dreams" emails. The FTC said this is a part of a larger campaign against deceptive email scams and spam in general. Eileen Harrington, director of the marketing practices division, said, "Be warned that if you are using email to perpetrate a deception, the Federal Trade Commission is watching, and we may come after you." By their own admission, the warnings do not seem to be overly effective; however, it's a good start. Read more here.
