Sonia Arrison, director of the Center for Technology Studies at the California-based Pacific Research Institute, has published a column on the latest ICANN debacle over Verisign's Sitefinder. Arrison is afraid this will threaten ICANN as an institution:
'That's only a year away, and if the VeriSign dispute offers more proof to the international community that ICANN needs major changes, you can bet bureaucrats at the UN will be pushing hard to take over.'
Mikael Pawlo's comment: Would it be such a bad thing, should the UN take over ICANN? As I have stated before, I find it more suitable than today's solution to make as many nations as possible, offline or online, participate in ICANN or an organisation replacing ICANN. It can be achieved through the United Nations or a similar body. We have to bear with the risk of red-tape methods, even more bureaucracy would have users better off than with todays system.
