Verisign Sues ICANN
posted by mpawlo on Friday February 27, @09:34AM
from the domain-wars dept.
Domain Names Verisign has filed a lawsuit against ICANN, claiming Verisign had unlawfully been prevented from adding new features to .com and .net, namely Sitefinder. As previously reported by Greplaw, Verisign was sued over Sitefinder, because the claimants felt that Sitefinder was an abuse of Verisign's power over the domain name system. SiteFinder is a service created to redirect all misspelled or unassigned .com domain names to a search page managed by the domain name registrar.

I don't understand the public outrage over the Sitefinder service. I understand Verign's outsized and perhaps undeserved influence outrages the community, but it seems to me that they're doing what's already being done by others: If I type in the wrong URL into Netscape or Explorer, they direct me to their own search engines as well.

    So what is the difference?

Because Sitefinder breaks DNS. This also affects everyone who uses the Internet. The Internet is much more then just the web.

Because SiteFinder messes up my lookups by my spam filtering system. I must admit i simply programed my routers to block access to the site finder service, yet the principle that a for profit company stealing access doesn't appeal.

It's been a while since I saw the explanation of that claim... could you point toward it?

OK, I understand the scope of all this, but *how* does it effectively "break" DNS?

You can choose another browser AC; you can't choose another DNS.

(Well, you can, but that's a whole different kettle of worms on the other side of the fence.)
