Declan on Dean's Privacy Views
posted by mpawlo on Tuesday January 27, @02:14AM
from the howard-dean dept.
privacy In his latest Cnet News.com column, Declan McCullagh looks into former Vermont governor and presidental racer Howard Dean's views on privacy. It appears that Dean wants a uniform ID card for the USA. Dean, according to McCullagh, proposed, some two years ago, that state drivers' licenses should be transformed into standardized national ID cards with added smartcards. These should be used for a vast array of things, such as accessing the Internet with identification.

McCullagh writes:

'It's difficult to reconcile Dean's current statements with his recent support--less than two years ago--for what amounts to a national ID card and a likely reduction in Americans' privacy. "Privacy is the new urban myth," Dean said in that March 2002 speech.'
