News Wired reports that the intrepretation of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-Spam Act) is ambigous. Email marketeers are, according to Wired, 'uneasy about potential exposure to lawsuits by government agencies and private Internet access providers'.

'I think the reality is that most companies who are engaged in e-mail marketing are not going to be deeply affected by (Can-Spam), because that law is geared towards dealing with abusive and deceptive practices, most of which legitimate companies are wise enough to avoid,' said Ray Everett-Church, chief privacy officer for security consultant ePrivacy Group to Wired.
