Verisign has recently been sued over its "SiteFinder" service which was created to redirect all misspelled or unassigned .com domain names to a search page managed by the domain name registrar. There has been much criticism from competitors and many broad Internet technical circles because they say that Versign's new service interferes with other Net applications.
The new class-action suit was filed by longtime Internet litigator Ira Rothken on behalf of a California e-mail and device synchronization software provider. Ira Rothken felt that Verisign's new service is an abuse of Verisign's power over the domain name system.
Some Web browsers and browser add-ons would redirect domain name mistakes to another search page or suggest possible alternatives but the new Verisign service points all misspellings to the same SiteFinder search page, making it difficult or impossible for other companies to provide those browser redirection services.
