Torvalds Says SCO's 'On Crack'
posted by mpawlo on Thursday August 21, @07:27AM
from the whoa dept.
Open Source In an unprecedent interview for Eweek, Linux founder Dr Linus Torvalds, gives his opinion on SCO's legal actions against IBM and Linux. Dr Torvalds is not shy about his feelings towards SCO:

'They are smoking crack. (---)And they claim they own JFS [journaled file system technology] too. Whee. They're not shy about claiming ownership of other people's code—while at the same time beating their breasts about how they have been wronged. So the SCO people seem to have a few problems keeping the truth straight, but if there is something they know all about, it's hypocrisy.'

Looks like their antics have turned them a profit [eweek.com].

    Maybe, Maybe not.

The one fortune 500 company is very likely Microsoft. There has been a rumor floating around that Microsoft could have paid them a substantial licensing fee to help fund their assault on LINUX. If this is the case, their numbers are a one time (basically exceptional) item which does not bode well for the future.

What we really do not know here is whether or not their business is better, or whether these results are income from a friendly partner.

Actually, Microsoft has announced it will pay SCO's proposed license fee.

Actually, no, what Microsoft announced in May was that they had paid to license SCO's Unix System V source code in order to build better Unix interoperability into Windows. Microsoft has not announced that it will pay SCO for run-time Linux licenses; indeed, the linked story pre-dates SCO's announcement of their Linux licensing program.
