Public schools are waiting to sign up on Internet2, which promises much faster data transfers than even the fastest connection that is currently available with the Internet. Recently, scientists transferred 6.7 gigabytes of data, the equivalent of two feature-length DVD movies, across 6,800 miles in less than one minute. That is more than 3,500 times faster than a typical home broadband connection. The speed of the new Internet will provide new opportunities and add value to the current public education system. One of the things that could be really useful with the speed of the new Internet is distance learning and teaching through teleconferences. Teachers and educators are still in the process of coming up with ways to take advantage of this new technology.

It will be interesting to see how the new Internet will be regulated. Will it be regulated as the current Internet is regulated? Will there be a corporation such as ICANN that is in charge of the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, etc.?
