Open Source On August 16, 2003, the Debian Project will celebrate its 10th birthday with several parties around the globe. The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on August 16th, 1993. At that time, the whole concept of a "distribution" of GNU/Linux was new. The most prominent guidelines for Debian development are the Debian Free Software Guidelines which are part of the Social Contract and which direct Debian's interpretation of Free Software and upon which the Debian distribution is based. They were later adopted as the Open Source Definition.
