Civil Liberties miladus writes " MIT has launched the Open Government Information Awarness, a site designed: 'To empower citizens by providing a single, comprehensive, easy-to-use repository of information on individuals, organizations, and corporations related to the government of the United States of America.
To allow citizens to submit intelligence about government-related issues, while maintaining their anonymity. To allow members of the government a  chance to participate in the process.' Perfect for July 4th."

    Heavy Traffic? (Score:1)

The homepage says that "[d]ue to heavy traffic, many features are unavailable . . . ."

Did anyone see it before the "heavy traffic" hit? Can you form user accounts or post information yet?

On a side-note, this thing seems cool but over-designed. /. is the best on-line community out there, and it seems to have a sort of Unix-style, "keep the design simple & let the users impose structure where needed" approach. There must be a (10^6)^6 ways to organize "GIA" data. They should have thrown up a simplistic web-site devoted to amassing information about the government and focused on building a fan base, then worried about the details of organizing the information.

But it's cool, and if they can get enough users & keep the feature set simple, it'll be great.
