Rumored Apple Purchase of Universal Fuels RIAA Discussion
posted by md on Monday April 14, @06:34AM
from the This-would-be-interesting dept.
Digital Entertainment As reported last week by the LA Times, Apple Computer, Inc., is allegedly interested in purchasing the Universal Records portion of Vivendi Universal, which is attempting to sell off its music and media businesses and re-focusing on whatever the hell it did before trying to become AOL Time/Warner. This news has caused quite a stir both from financial analysts who wonder if Apple can afford such a monumental purchase (estimated street price: $6 billion) and, more interestingly, from many who wonder what would happen if a company who has often earned the contempt of the RIAA for creating really neat-O MP3 devices, came to be the owner of the largest music company in the world.

Meanwhile, Apple is also rumored to be preparing a new online music service to compete with the many failed attempts by other companies at offering consumers an alternative to file sharing networks. No news on whether these two developments are related.
