Analysis of the Sapphire/Slammer Worm
posted by scubacuda on Saturday February 15, @08:42PM
from the destructive-payload-next-time? dept.
Security Nicholas C Weaver et al (who many readers know from How to 0wn the Internet in Your Spare Time) has recently co-written The Spread of the Sapphire/Slammer Worm The worm doubled in size every 8.5 seconds, infecting more than 90 percent of vulnerable hosts within 10 minutes. Interestingly, the worm's scanning technique was "so aggressive that it quickly interfered with its own growth," leaving these instances forced to compete with existing infections for scarce bandwidth. (Scan your network with Foundstone's SQLScan v1.00 to see if anything you have is vulnerable)
