Gulf News has published an interesting - if popular - piece on the effects of pricing schemes on the general attitude towards piracy. The economics of piracy are obvious, but the question hard to answer is what price and what level of intellectual property protection is just right? The market should tell us the answer, but it is very hard to measure black-market effects. Further, my guess is that piracy is a much more complex issue than just pricing. It is a matter of feasability (it is much more easy to copy a computer program than a painting) and lack of understanding of the copyright issues involved as much as a pricing issue.
