VDOT Fires 25 Based on Net Usage
posted by turmis on Wednesday October 09, @05:36PM
from the I-was-conducting-a-survey,-looking-for-illegal-materials...-REALLY dept.
privacy The Virginia Department of Transportation fired 17 permanent employees for spending up to several hours a day surfing pornographic websites. The Department also let go another 8 temporary workers based on their frequent visits to non-work related sites such as ESPN and EBay. The Department cited its policy prohibiting non-work related use of the internet. Commissioner Phillip Shucet wryly observed that "sexually pornographic conduct is not considered a matter of the state." The State conducted...

an internal audit in which auditors monitored the web traffic of all VDOT employees. All of the workers let go were men in midlevel or administrative positions. The State also announced that the terminated employees would not be replaced. The State reasoned that if the employees were spending so much time at their illicit activities their services must be expendable. In addition to the firings, the state reprimanded 61 more employees for improper net usage. Employees are warned that their usage may be monitored each time they log on to the state system.

The Washington Times has the story.

The fact that these employees will not be replaced provides an interesting twist. Although I think the state is perfectly within its rights to fire employees who are wasting time and money, not to mention looking at pornography on company time, I wonder if this was an easy excuse to let a few people go while giving the rest of the employees a bit of a kick in the pants.
