George Toft, of the
Phoenix
Linux User Group (PLUG), recently discovered that many
local governments in Arizona have
an
interesting rule in their procurement policy.
Corporations which are considered dangerous can be
barred from contracting. One criteria for this
consideration is being found guilty at the federal
level of anti-trust violations, as is the case
with Microsoft.
Many members of PLUG contacted their local
government offices to ask about the policy. Maricopa
County responded to Matt Alexander's request
by inviting PLUG to a forum to discuss the
issue. On Monday, July 8, more than 20 members of
the PLUG and a few
RedHat
employees from the Flagstaff office met at the
Maricopa County offices to discuss the issue with
the County CIO and several members of his staff. (Read the meeting minutes)

Maricopa County reported that it has formed a strategic alliance
with Microsoft, and does not have any motivation
or intention to debar the company. The procurement policy
does not obligate them, and they are very pleased
with their ability to get Microsoft software to
work well with other Microsoft software.
The PLUG is continuing to discuss the issue with
the county, and has begun a campaign to raise
the desktop installed base of Linux in the area.
Since Maricopa County's primary defense was that
95% of the citizens in the county use Microsoft,
PLUG intends to change that figure. You can contact
Robert
Bushman to find out how you can help with
the upcoming Install Fests.
