On the tail of a Supreme Court decision which found unconstitutional a prior bill criminalizing porn that appears to be of children, the House of Representatives has passed a new bill that attempts to cure the consitutional defects of its predecessor. While the old bill made unlawfual any image that "appears to be" a minor, the new bill prohibits any computer-generated image that is "virtually indistinguishable from that of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct." The bill has already drawn criticism from those who say it doesn't do much to calm the worries of the Supreme Court with respect to free speech, and is merely a quickly drafted attempt to satisfy the likes of Attorney General Ashcroft, who had been on a war path since the high court's decision. CNet News has coverage.
