ICANN Troubles Continue

Internet Governance It seems you just can't dash off to Romania without someone raising a stink these days. ICANN, currently hosting one of it's regularly scheduled meetings in Bucharest, has been subject the usual criticism for holding closed meetings, but has also been pointed out for apparently attempting to force adoption of it's new "blueprint" for reform with little or no notice to the GAC. Meanwhile, Prof. Milton Meuller released a study that, yet again, demonstrated the failings of the UDRP process.

See also some serious concerns -- from ICANNwatcher fnord -- about the quality of the and featurse of ICANN's recent webcasts.

As fnord points out [icannwatch.com], the webcast that the Berkman Center and I previously offered included certain features specifically aimed at increased transparency. (Key examples: full and immediately-updated listing of online participants; full and immediately-updated listing of remote comments received; reporting of comments read and not read; systems to allow remote participants to communicate among themselves.)

The new webcast is quite a bit simpler -- but sadly lacks these features (and others).

Read fnord's take on this [icannwatch.com].

Obvious disclaimer: I used to run the Berkman Center's webcasts of periodic ICANN meetings [harvard.edu].
