Shadow Wars in Broad Daylight

Civil Liberties Emergence is the next logical step in managing the balance between security and freedom. That is the conclusion of UPI columnist James C. Bennett. In his column, Bringing in Echelon from the cold, he suggests that governments spy as people breathe, automatically and inevitably. Echelon is the supposed worldwide data- and telecommunications sniffer, hearing all, seeing all. Bennett wants to add transparency to the spying process and Echelon. Personally, I agree that spying as such is a part of any governmental security program and that Echelon is a very controversial spying program, but I have a very hard time beliving that spying could ever be subject to transparency. No one will watch the watchers and we have to submit to trusting our elected public officials.
