Markle Foundation Criticizes ICANN
posted by md on Friday June 21, @07:28AM
from the strike-839 dept.
Internet Governance ICANNWatch reports that the Markle Foundation recently released a scathing report that criticizes ICANN, calling it "seriously flawed," among more particular jabs. The report is available online in RTF format. This comes on the heals of U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass), saying "Although ICANN is supposed to be a consensus organization, the irony is that the only thing it has achieved global consensus on is that it is a failure." Nevertheless, ICANN faithfuls insist on maintaining that criticism of ICANN is somehow limited to wild-eyed academics like Michael Geist, et al.

I think anyone with eyes-- wild or not-- can see that ICANN is flawed. Perhaps this is what happens when a group is formed to only slightly manage something.

I wouldn't go so far as to say ICANN's flawed *because* it's supposed to be "weak and powerless" (to quote Esther), but you've hit on something very important: this is a group that was asked to do something *extremely difficult.* Not the tasks themselves. The "administration" of those tasks in an intensely politically charged situation.
