Proposal for EU Software Patents

Copyright The European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market has released a working document (PDF) on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions. One of the big issues is whether business method patents and patentability of computer programs will be introduced through a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council.

Skane Sjaelland Linux User Group (SSLUG) has issued its preliminary answers to the working document. SSLUG is the leading Linux organisation in Northern Europe.

SSLUG concludes that further harmonisation of national patent laws on patentability of technical realizations of non-inventions is not possible. SSLUG stresses that there is an increasing number of open source software projects being threatend and sometimes shut down by patent holders.
