Column Critical of ICANN Sparks Raucous Debate

Internet Governance Michael Geist's June 13 column arguing that ICANN's inability to facilitate meaningful public participation is leading to its failure as a regulatory organization has sparked a raucous debate on Declan McCullagh's Politech listserv. The column drew a heated response from ICANN's chief outside counsel Joe Sims. Sims claims that Geist "has it all wrong" and that ICANN is a consensus driven organization which was never really intended to have a directly elected component. Sims's response immediately drew fire from both Geist, who defended his column, and Karl Auerbach, one of the only publicly elected members of ICANN Board of Directors. Auerbach blasted ICANN as the "consensus among a chosen few" and suggested that it was a product of back room deals and political maneuvering. Auerbach suggests that ICANN has been largely useless as a result. The debate highlights some of the most pressing concerns of the struggling ICANN and gives some insight as to what the future might hold.
