The Alexis de Tocqueville Institution recently released a position paper allegedly stating the evils of Open Source software. Microsoft was an alleged financial sponsor of the paper, though no such admission has been made by the institution or Microsoft. According to ADTI, the paper outlines "how open source might facilitate efforts to disrupt or sabotage electronic commerce, air traffic control or even sensitive surveillance systems." Critics have argued that the paper instead outlines ADTI's inability to see any fault in Microsoft's code and ignore the strong business and security case in favor of Open Source.
Meanwhile, the Department of Defense received research it had funded in attempting to determine whether Open Source makes good business sense for military use. The report by the MITRE Corporation appears to take a more balanced approach to the question.
