ArsTechnica reports about the case of one website owner who is fighting threats from the MPAA in court. The owner of Internetmovies.com received cease and desist letters from the MPAA in March and April of 2001, claiming that the site was illegally distributing Hollywood movies. The site owner claims the allegations are false, and that the threats caused his site to shutdown for some time after its ISP received the letters.
The site apparently features movie news, trailers, and information about "movies available online," for which is charges a subscription fee. Internetmovies.com hosts a page with information about the dispute, and the complaint is online as well.
It appears that at least some of what the MPAA claimed about Internetmovies.com is false, which seems understandable, given the tens of thousands of mostly automated cease and desist letters it sends out each year. The question remains whether enough of these sorts of complaints will ever occur to cause Hollywood to reevaluate it's nasty-gram machine.
