After receiving multiple warnings from the Church of Scientology, Internet search engine Google has forwarded cease and decist letters from the organization to free speech site ChillingEffects.org. The letters had ordered Google to remove links from its search engine to a site called Xenu.net, which criticizes Scientology and its practices. The ChillingEffects.org site went public earlier this year, aiming to publicize less-than-accurate threats against the civil liberties of net citizens. Many have criticized the Church of Scientology for using copyright laws to silence its critics. The threatening letters to Google allege that the Xenu site uses copyrighted photographs and that it is therefore illegal for Google to link to the site through its search engine.
