Disturbing the Public Mind

News scryglass writes "

An Iranian Ayatollah has announced new laws addressing their concept of Cyber Crimes:

"Anyone who disseminates information aimed at disturbing the public mind through computer systems or telecommunications... would be punished in accordance with the crime of disseminating lies".

Six online journalists and webloggers have been arrested: Shahram Rafizadeh, Babak Ghafouri-Azar, Rouzbeh Amir-Ebrahimi, Hanif Mazroui, Omid Memarian and Mostafa Derayati. And a travel ban has been imposed on Emadedin Baghi.

+ I wish to call your attention to what seems to be their focus on "Thought Crimes," rather than our concept which focuses on Behavior in terms of "disorderly conduct" vis a vis civil order. Also notable is their equation of this form of Cyber Crime with Fraud.

This sounds ostensibly good. In the west we are way too liberal with 'free expression' and the result is a glut of salacious and prurient material which is corrupting.
Now if they can just stop making nuclear material....
