Might Kerry be some sort of Bizarro Ashcroft? Reason Online examines the changing civil liberties positions held by Kerry and Ashcroft. Kerry (with the FBI, NSA, and DOJ) supported the "clipper chip," as well as McCain in the Secure Public Networks Act (a bill that codified the administration's export ban and started a key escrow system).
According to David Sobel, general counsel of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, then Sen. John Ashcroft (R-Mo.)
(who supported the ACLU in favor of the individual's right to encrypt messages and export encryption software) "was kind of the go-to guy for all of us on the Republican side of the Senate."
