Band Retains Digital Rights to Own Music
posted by scubacuda on Thursday July 22, @09:04PM
from the dept.
Digital Entertainment hardpack writes "The band They Might Be Giants has released their 8th studio album "The Spine," while retaining digital rights to their music. It probably helps that they're on Zoe Records, part of Rounder Records. In an interview with Newsweek they say, "[The record companies] should be scared.""

Perhaps the record companies shouldn't be TOO afraid. Rounder Records is listed by the RIAA [riaa.com] as a reporting member. I point this out with regret, as I highly enjoy the music of many Rounder-signed artists.

How many prominent (even though Rounder is small, I would argue that they still are pretty renowned) labels aren't reporting members?

The RIAA is *supposed* to represent its members; unfortunately, as most representatives, it only represents the few most powerful of them.
