Dave Winer may well be a Berkman Fellow, but his unexpected and sudden decision to - with little notice - close Weblogs.com, a free blog-hosting service, is hard to defend and understand. Wired reports that Winer's decision left thousands of bloggers without access to their blogs. As blogs gain in popularity their importance does likewise. Winer is of course free to start and close services as he pleases, but bloggers may want to consider what happens to Dave Winer's other baby - RSS - should he grow tired of it. Thank God for Creative Commons licenses, but maybe RSS is better off as a format as true open code with a BSD or Free Software Foundation license?
