Mozilla Goes for Trademark Protection

Open Source As reported by Job for Gnuheter, open code browser Mozilla turns to cease and desist tactics. Mozilla will try to get rid of unlicensed merchandise to protect its trademark. This is not far-fetched decision, considering a prior decision to protect the name of browser Firefox. The proposal was not entirely embraced by the Slashdot crowd but worked better over at Mozillazine.

The boys at /. tend (sometimes) to be a little extreme when it comes to propriatory access and lawyers. Both are disliked on principal (guilty until proven innocent).

Because of the structure of the Mozilla organization, they are dependent on contributions to continue their work. One way to contribute is to purchase a merchanise item (say a key chain) with the Mozilla logo on it. The assumption by the purchaser is that a portion of the purchase price goes to support the Mozilla project.

Allowing others to exploit that goodwill is both damaging to the Project (less donated revenue) and dishonest.

Where I do not like the case in principal, I support Mozilla's action.

The (valid) Slashdot concern is regarding the distribution of Mozilla. Most (if not all) Linux distributions include Mozilla. Now a problem exists including artwork or using the brandname if any changes were made to the codebase. Debian in particular is concerned about maintaining complience with their Social Contract.
