ACLU Criticizes US VISIT
posted by scubacuda on Thursday January 08, @12:07PM
from the discriminatory-dragnets dept.
Civil Liberties The ACLU warns that the new immigrant tracking program, US Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (VISIT), can only increase confusion among immigrants to the United States in terms of when, where and how they have to register with the government, and will do nothing to end discriminatory tracking of Arabs and Muslims based on national origin and religion. "Contrary to assertions by the Homeland Security Department, the US VISIT program is an addition to -- not a substitute for -- the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (also known as NSEERS), a special registration program that singled out Arab and Muslim men because of their national origin and that continues to subject them to special and confusing requirements," says Timothy Edgar, an ACLU Legislative Counsel.
