Apple's Itunes Due For PC
posted by mpawlo on Wednesday July 30, @02:12PM

Copyright As reported by Greplaw, Apple now faces serious competition from a number of alternatives, such as Buymusic. BuyMusic.com has a catalogue of more than 300,000 titles, which is substantially more than Apple's 200,000. However, the Buymusic service still might not attract customers, while the licensing agreement, regulating end-users' rights, is vastly different from iTunes'. BuyMusic's songs have different licensing restrictions, regulating number of allowed CD-burning, transfer to other devices etcetera. The songs can not be played at all at Apple's popular portable music device iPod. The big difference is that Buymusic is for PC, while Apple's iTunes Music Store is for Macintosh.

According to a Billboard story, Apple will release its iTunes service for PC customers by the end of this year. During the Jupiter Plug.In conference in New York, Peter Lowe, Apple's director of marketing for applications and services, said the company intends to launch a PC service with broad content-usage rights similar to those enjoyed by iTunes consumers using Mac computers.

It could also be noted that Apple claims to have sold more than 300,000 iPod portable players since the release of the iTunes Music Store in April this year. Apple does have a strong alternative with extensive, if not absolute, rights for the end-user. The most interesting observation must be that commercial and legal downloading alternatives now are competing and trying to attract customers. It will be very interesting to see whether for example Kazaa's customers will migrate to legal alternatives or not.

BuyMusic.Com is awful, and blatantly ripped off Apple's commercials. Furthermore, even PC users are getting P.O.'d at the categorically awful customer service. Check out the Slash dot story [slashdot.org].
