Gender Inequality Between Male & Female Avatars

News In The Price of 'Man' and 'Woman': A Hedonic Pricing Model of Avatar Attributes in a Synthethic World, Edward Castronova (of Cal State Fullerton) finds that even though there are no gender-based differences between male and female avatars (in games like EverQuest), female avatars sell for a significant amount less than male avatars. From the abstract:
"The average avatar price is 333 dollar; the price discount for females is 40 to 55 dollars, depending on methods. The discount may stem from a number of causes, including discrimination in Earth society, the maleness of the EverQuest player base, or differences in well-being related to male and female courtship roles. We do know, however, that these differences cannot be caused by sex-based differences in the abilities of the body, since in the fantasy world of Norrath, there are none."

Have they considered that most Everquest players are guys, and that perhaps most of them would rather play a male character?

There are actually people like that though man, I know it sounds lame but males playing females (shims, or so we call them on Prexus) do play in part because they no females get hooked up / buffed more often by horney teenage guys.. which is pretty gross cause some of these shims like to roleplay like they are chicks /veto /roleplay

Huh? I never assume anything about what sex some player really is, it's just a character! My choice is about 50-50 in every RPG that I play, usually based on the nick/name that I come up with.

My choice in FPS games is which one is skinnier...thus, able to be missed by bullets easier.

Uhm. Ever thought that many people prefer to roleplay in a Role Playing Game? It's half the fun for a lot of people out there..

Roleplaying sux, be real! Isn't this insanity on a new level? I play "roleplaying" games because I enjoy matching my wits and player skills against a human opponent on a 3D battleground.

Make a game tagged as "NON-roleplaying" with all the pop and bang of EQ or DAOC like games and you will still see the same population, perhaps more.

Half the fun? I don't think so, lets say 1% of the fun.

Guys, roleplaying a female avatar is NOT ok, Imagine.... "dude A does roleplay marriage to d00d B". That is queer.

RPG...Role Playing Game...Maybe, just MAYBE! That means that some of the people playing the game are going to role play. I am a guy, I will sometimes play as a female character in games like EQ or DAOC, not to get hooked up, or buffed more, or grouped with more, but because in my sick twisted mind of rpgs, I view support classes as female mostly. I envision a bard as a female, a druid as a female, and so forth. Not that I'm sexiest or whatever, thats just what I envision the class to be. Also, when playing daoc where you are participating in PvP alot more then in EQ (I didn't play on the pvp eq server) its way more fun to kill someone with a female character because then they feel 10 times worse cause they got beat by a girl. Its a game, people will play it however they want, just remember that its a GAME!

Why is it when someone tries to make a point they know won't be supported by "normal" logical arguments, they fall back on "It's just a game"? Guys playing girls is devient. If a guy grabbed a gi joe, that's normal.. a barbie, that's devient. Not bad, not evil, devient, in that it deviates from the statistical norm. Most guys play guys, mst girls play girls. Devients cross the line. Argue all you want, that's born out in the analysis I've seen of avatar gender associations.

Sure. Any anyone who plays, say, Tomb Raider is a homosexual. Because, you know, staring at Duke Nukem's polygonal ass for hours on end instead of some chick in hot pants is such a totally manly, not-gay thing to do. The one thing I heard most often whenever I had a verbal dispute while playing a female character on EQ was "I bet you're not even really a girl!" My reply was always "Sure. I bet you're not even really an Orc, poser." From now on I'm going to finish by calling them a deviant.

I don't understand guys that play guy characters. You're creating a fictional character right? You're going to be staring at this fictional character's ass for 10 hours at a time while you run him/her around a virtual game world.

Hey, if you want to stare a guy's ass for hours on end playing a stupid game, by all means, be my guest. I will try to create the hottest looking chick I possibly can.
