Six top music retail companies have announced plans to offer digital music for download and traditional medium distribution. The retailer say that the songs can be used on computers and on digital devices. The new services will be called Echo and will rely on Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology from Microsoft and Real Networks. The new organization has not yet convinced the record companies to license large portions of their catalog to the service. They also have not offered any explanation as to why this platform-limited, DRM crippled, and otherwise limited distribution system should be more compelling to consumers than existing option from the Big 5 record companies, which have had little success. The Chicago Sun-Time has coverage.
