Open Source In an article published by CIOL, concern is expressed within some sectors of the open source community that Microsoft will use patent infringement claims to effectively reduce the sale and use of software licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) in the United States. Microsoft holds some 1,800 patents and could in effect frustrate if not kill independent open source development by throwing hundreds of patent claims, scaring off developers and creating new costs to open source development. Conspiracy theory or real threat? Time will tell.
