While most consumers scour eBay for cheap deals and novelty items, lawyers now use the auction site to bid on evidence. A growing number of product liability lawyers bid daily on evidentiary items, such as commercial and household artifacts, historic corporate documents, maintenance manuals and product catalogs.

For example, a Los Angeles lawyer preparing lawsuits for lung cancer victims recently bought old cigarette advertisements in order to better show jurors how tobacco companies hooked his clients.
There are also dozens of active "asbestos" auctions every day. Mark Lanier, a Houston asbestos lawyer, recently paid $2,125 to win a 1941 Naval Machinery manual that contained details on the use of asbestos aboard ships.
