As Japan initiated its compulsory ID system on Monday, protesters danced in objection and presented the Home Affairs Ministry with a petition demanding the government halt the program, News.com reports. The new system links municipal computer systems and gives each Japanese citizen an 11-digit ID number.
The computer database plans to store the names, addresses, dates of birth, gender and the new ID numbers for each of Japan's 126 million citizens, in an attempt to make it easier for them to obtain documents for a variety of public services and benefits.

"We don't want to be under government surveillance. Stop the resident registry system," protesters shouted outside the ministry.
The recent demonstrations follow a suit filed by the group at the end of last month, demanding the system be abolished because it is unconstitutional.
Critics claim the system will promote censorship and say the new ID number will give hackers a new tool to create havoc with. At least five cities refuse to join the system, while residents of Yokohama, Japan's second-largest city, will be allowed to choose whether to take part. Consequently, about 4 million of Japan's 127 million people live in cities that are refusing to introduce the program.
