Lawmakers Push Bill Giving Copyright Owners Right to Hack
posted by md on Wednesday June 26, @06:39AM
from the dept.
Copyright Representative Howard Berman (D-CA) has announced that he is preparing a bill that would exempt copyright owners from employing techniques aimed at investigating Peer-to-Peer file trading networks. "While P2P (peer-to-peer) technology is free to innovate new and more efficient methods of distribution that further exacerbate the piracy problem, copyright owners are not equally free to craft technological responses," Berman has said. "This is not fair." As the law currently exists, argues the RIAA and Berman, copyright owners may be performing illegal acts when they sabotage P2P networks by various means. CNet News has coverage.

all I need to do is become the copyright owner of anything that could conceivably be distributed electronically and gain free reign to "determine if copyright violation has occurred"?

What if I suspect that my content may be located somewhere on the Microsoft network. Does that give me the right to break down security measures and break pre-existing laws in order to enforce my copyright? I sure hope so...
